The distinctive tree-like vertical green structures at Changi Business Park transform an open space between two buildings into a green sanctuary for occupants and visitors. Standing at approximately 4.5 metres tall, the installations introduce greenery vertically within an otherwise highly built-up environment while serving as prominent landscape features.
Located within a naturally ventilated foyer, the green structures also incorporate seating around their bases. This allows them to function as green respites where occupants and visitors can sit beneath the greenery, while contributing to a more pleasant and comfortable environment.
The vertical greenery was designed to remain sleek so that sufficient space could be retained around the base of each structure for seating. To achieve this, the irrigation control panels were concealed within the structures, with maintenance doors incorporated at their bases for easy access.
Growth lights were also installed at the bottom of the structures and directed upwards to support plant growth. This arrangement reduces visual disturbance to people using the seating areas while providing additional light for the plants.
The planting design was intended to complement the surrounding landscape while allowing the green structures to stand out as focal features. Spiral patterns were introduced across the vertical surfaces, with contrasting foliage used to create colour and visual interest.
Species such as Crotons and Tradescantia spathacea ‘Vittata’ provide colourful accents, while hardy and relatively easy-to-maintain plants such as Philodendron, Heptapleurum arboricola, Syngonium and Dracaena reflexa form part of the wider planting palette. The selection balances aesthetics with the need for a sustainable and maintainable vertical greenery installation.
